When Carl is older we see that he has been in conflict with people who are trying to industrialize the area around him. In the forest near Paradise falls he walks around and explores a bit of the scenery and environment.

Carl has adamantly chosen to keep his house where hi lived with his wife and refuses to move away and sell it so that he can preserve the memory of his wife. He Carl is getting forced to move out of his house he remembers his and wife's goal to live at paradise falls and goes through with is by flying his house with balloons.

We then see the main character growing old and spending his time with his wife. When Russel is let into Carl's house he shows a lot of curiosity and learns how the house is flying and uses that knowledge to steer them around.

In the beginning of the movie we see the main character as a child making friends. Russel shows off amazing social skills and behaviors when he is interacting and speaking to Carl on their adventure.

The couple goes through grief when they find out that Ellie can't have children but they continue to push through and live further. Throughout the movie we see how stern and stubborn Carl has become since his childhood and during his adventure we see that his interactions with Doug, Russel, and Kevin have softened his personality.
